1984 Oldsmobile 88 short grind when starts

1984 Oldsmobile 88 V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

had advanced check the alternator, said was fine, to check the starter teeth or the flywheel teeth.I cannot afford a repair service so i am trying to fix the problem myself.When the car starts there is a very brief grind noise.suggetions?

I would say either the teeth on the flywheel or starter are bad or the solenoid is delayed on engaging the starter to the flywheel (which could lead to damage). Remove the starter and check it out. Have the parts store bench test it to make sure the solenoid is working properly and not sticking.
