My car has been sitting around for over a year now and has not been routinely started and driven. I want to get it back on the road. I read somewhere that I should bleed out the old fuel as it maybe varnish and could cause problems down the line. Should I be worried about this? If so, what is the technique on bleeding out the fuel? I am a novice in car mechanics, handy and willing to learn.

Yes, the fuel should be drained and replaced along with the fuel filter. You will likely have to remove the fuel tank to be able to drain it.
