Alright, once again, I have found another problem with this car. I'm starting to regret buying it. Anyway, I just drove 6 miles, and hadn't driven it since this morning. And as soon as I shut it off, the oil, well I think it's oil, it smells like burnt oil, started spewing onto the ground. I have drove it further w no problem, granted today it's like 100°, I live in Phoenix Az. My mechanic had said there isn't a case or cover over where the oil is, and is causing it to leak. Do you think the oil got so heated it caused this? I included pics of it. The 2nd pic is from the ground looking up under the engine.

Hi,

I'm not sure what cover your mechanic is referring to. If a cover is missing that prevents a leak, it should be replaced. However, looking at the pics you attached, it is a large leak. Also, if your mechanic is referring to the plastic cover that covers the bottom of the engine compartment, that isn't going to cause this.

Do me a favor. Check to see if any of the fluids are low. For example, is engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, or any other fluid low? If you lost that much of anything, it should show up when checking levels.

Let me know.

Joe

Okay, so I've checked the oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, the coolant reservoir was bone dry, and the engine is a little too warm still to check the antifreeze. I am unable to get the dipstick out to check the transmission fluid, it's almost as if it was sealed shut. Any ideas on how to free it?

Hi,

I have a feeling the leak is from the cooling system. Let me know what you find once it cools off and is safe to open.

As far as the transmission dipstick, they can rust/corrode. Be gentle because we don't want to break it. However, if you twist it back and forth a little at a time while applying outward pressure, it should eventually come out.

If it is a transmission fluid, it should have a reddish color to it. So, take a tissue and dab some of the fluid off the driveway, and see if you can identify a color.

Let me know.

Joe

Here's what I got using a white rag. I'm going out right now to check the antifreeze. The oil was fine, the brake fluid is okay, and the power steering fluid was way low.

Hi,

I doubt it is power steering fluid. I don't think the entire system holds that much. Top it off and watch to see if it gets low again.

As far as the coolant is concerned, let me know what you find. Additionally, did you attach a pic in your last post? If so, it didn't come through.

Let me know.

The coolant is full, I took a pic of it as well not sure if u can see it, but I still can't get the transmission dipstick out. However, by elimination, I'm gonna say it's the transmission. Fluid all over the ground! This is bad isn't it?

Hi,

I'm not sure what I'm looking at in the pic. That doesn't appear to be the radiator. Let me know. Also, thanks for the pic. The fluid appears to be a brownish color. That could be somewhat dirty transmission fluid or engine oil. If it is transmission fluid, don't drive it until we determine the location of the leak. It will likely be a transmission cooler line that has rusted and is leaking. However, an easy way to determine if it is the transmission is to start the engine and see if it immediately starts dripping. The lines are under a good bit of pressure and will continue leaking if there is fluid in the trans.

If the leak is the transmission, turn the engine off and we need to repair it before restarting it. If the fluid gets too low, it can damage the transmission.

If you look below, I attached a pic of how the transmission cooler lines go from the trans to the radiator. See if you can check them to see if something is rusted and leaking.

Let me know.

Joe

Hi,

I watched the video. It appears to be leaking in front of the engine approximately where the radiator is located. Check the coolant hoses, and the radiator itself, and check the transmission cooler lines I mentioned to see if they appear to be wet. Watching how it drips and seeing the steam leads me to believe it is coolant.

Also, open the hood and look downward to see if you see anything wet. Pay attention to the serpentine belt. If it is wet, it could be a water pump.

Let me know.

Joe

PS: The video helped!

So, after looking not me, but my friend who knew what and where to look, we found out it was a hose and was leaking transmission fluid. There was a hole where the hose attached to the part, I don't know what part it was attached to, but I want to thank you so much for all your help!

Hi,

Thanks for the update. I'm glad I was able to help. If I had to guess, I would say the leak was near the radiator. Regardless, I'm glad you found it before damage occurred to the transmission.

Regardless, take care of yourself, and feel free to come back anytime in the future. Also, if you have any questions regarding the hose that failed, let me know and I'll do my best to help.
