Car listed above has a 16 valve zetec dohc engine that is leaking oil through a hole (see picture #1) near bell housing where engine meets transmission. It slides down bell housing and drips near position #2 in picture.

It used to be rather thick blackish/brownish before and I couldn't figure out where it was coming.

It has been like this for couple of years but seems to be increasing lately. So I left the car raised on jack stand last night and and this morning saw red oil weeping through that hole.

Is this rear main seal or something?

Thank you.

Hello, I'm Danny.

Yes, that would be your rear main crankshaft oil seal that is leaking. I've attached step-by-step picture instructions below on how to remove/replace. This requires the transmission to be removed/set back so it's a pretty involved job and requires specialty tools to remove the seal. Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.

Hi Danny,

Thank you very much for the reply and the pictures.

I found several seal install tools for other motors but nothing for the 16V zetec dohc in this car. If you know of one, I would appreciate a link.

Thank you.
