Oil gauge

When car off where should oil gauge rest or do suppose be down or up. if up what can cause it to stay up?

The motor used in the gauge will normally stay wherever it is when power is cut as you turn the key off. Once the car has sat a few seconds it will usually return to zero if you were to turn the key back on but not start the engine.
