discovered that the car had no oil in it - the oil light never came on - put 3qts oil in car drove for 40 miles checked oil again and it was empty

make sure the engine is off and car is on level ground if it's using it that bad it should be really smoking gout the tailpipe. or showing a leak with something this severe check the oil filter for being loose or an oil pressure sending unit leaking badly.
