Your car has four oxygen sensors total, two primary and two secondary sensors. here is the location of the sensors and how to change them out. Here is a generic guide to help you step by step with instructions in the diagrams below to show you how on your car:

Your car has a total of 4 O2 sensors. There are two mounted in the exhaust manifolds before the converters, those control the fuel mix for the engine. Then there are two more mounted behind the converters, those are there to monitor the converters in operation. The upstream two would give you lean/rich codes while the downstream ones give the codes like a P0420 or P0430 telling you that the converters are not operating. However, in most cases people see the related codes and replace the sensors, when the issue isn't the sensors but the parts they monitor. That is why scan tools are needed so much these days, they can tell you what the sensors are "seeing" in the exhaust stream and let you test them some to determine what the fault really is.
Do you have a sensor related code?

Hello,

There are four oxygen sensors on this vehicle. Two in the front and two in the rear of the engine. I attached some diagrams below showing the connector locations on the engine, the sensor will plug in there where it is highlighted and screw into the exhaust pipe either on the catalytic converter or the pipe itself. The two front sensors are fairly simple to replace whereas the rear sensors will be more involved.

Thanks for using 2CarPros. Com,
William

One on top easy to see, one just below the engine in pipe, and one more further out. Cannot find any more so is there just three, two up flows and one down flow or is there four, one more somewhere? Not sure on the car listed above with a dohc 24 v. Thanks

The general rule on how to figure this out is you have one upstream sensor on each bank of cylinders. So if you have one bank, you have one upstream. If you have two banks, you have two upstream sensors.

The downstream sensors are also called catalyst monitors so you have one for each converter you have. If you have one cat, you have one sensor, two catalytic converters, two sensors.

Your engine should have two converters so you should have two downstream sensors.

Here is a guide that will help with this:

Take a look at this information below and let us know if you have questions. Thanks

I'm wondering how many O2 Sensors are in my 2000 Taurus w/ 24 valve, DOHC and where they are located. Also, are the sensors for this vehicle all the same in regard to the sensor itself with just different wiring lengths?

I'm replacing (1) O2 sensor that is issuing a code. As I've looked a little farther into information on O2 sensors, given the mileage of my Taurus & the fact that none of them have ever been replaced, it seems that it would be an excellent idea to replace them all. I have heard/read that there are (3) total, but have also been told that there are four.

Also, as I have shopped for them it appears that even though there are differnt part numbers, that any of them seem ultimately to be both upstream & downstream with only the length of the wires actually being different--varying with different source sites and purchasing information. Thank you for your timely assistance.
