Northstar engine trying to change the coil packs?

I would not recommend trying to fabricate or rewire a conversion just because the parts store supplied a different four-coil bracket. The correct approach is to identify which ignition system is actually on this engine and obtain the matching coils and harness. If possible, please upload a picture of the coils currently installed on the engine and a picture of the four-coil assembly you are trying to install. Also, give us the eighth digit of the VIN. With those, we can identify exactly which ignition system you have and tell you which parts you need. The images below should help you.

When i go to buy the coil pack it says it’s discontinued. So what do i do then?

First off, why are you changing the coils? Misfire or damage? The units are a plate with the coils bolted to them as shown in the image above and individual coils are still available, the complete plate assembly design is what is no longer available. The replacement units are a plug and play replacement for the 4.6. Now if you mean that your car has a single coil but 4 plug wires per side like the image attached, you may want to check the actual year of the vehicle as that coil unit was used from 1987-1999 and has replaceable coils on it. Could you take a picture of the coil assembly you have, please?

This is the coil pack that I have on my car a single one. And there’s 8 of them. The problem as to why I’m changing them is when I start the car it shakes when idling. The whole car shakes. I’ve cleaned the maf sensor the air filters good the idle air control and throttle body are both cleaned as well. So I hooked it up and it’s throwing p0300 random misfire. What would you recommend I do to fix the problem. Oh and it also does at random stop signs when I’m stopped there. Like it just dies out of no where

That is a single coil for one cylinder, you have 8 of them and that is why you get the units on brackets as that would be all 8 coils. However a P0300 is a random multiple misfire, IE it is multiple misfires across all cylinders, most likely not the coils as they would all have to be failing at the same time. Instead what you want to do is look at the misfire counters and see which cylinders are generating the most misfires. The Northstar engines do have a bad reputation when they start throwing codes. Has this engine ever overheated? Or used and coolant? I would look at the misfire counters, then pull the plugs in those cylinders and look at them for anything strange like glazing or steam cleaning. From there I would install new plugs, then shuffle the coils from the misfiring cylinders after examining them for damage and carbon tracking.

Ok i changed every spark plug. And still throwing code p0300. And i smell gas bad like outside of the car and the service engine light is now flashing not jus solid.

Smelling gas and the P0300 together are not good. The extra fuel might be because the cylinders are not firing and the fuel is simply coming out the exhaust. Flashing is normal with the P0300 as it can do damage to the converter through having raw fuel dumped into it, so the light flashes to warn you that it has a serious problem. Did you look at the misfire counters to see which cylinder(s) are missing the most?

No i dont have a counter, is there a cheap one or a way to use one like at oriellys or something

The counters are part of the information that a scan tool can read from the PCM, it shows the counts as each cylinder registers a misfire. Without a scan tool you cannot see them. I would get a scan tool to be able to do much work like looking at the misfires, testing the injectors and coils and to see what is going on in the engine.
