I have a problem with my wk 2005 3.7. Lately I can hear a noise coming from the rear end I don't know where exactly the sound is coming from, it sounds like the exhaust is loose, but I checked the exhaust and it is very tight and fixed. The noise happens only when accelerating uphill after a short time.
any idea?

Check the bolts holding the rear end on and the transmission mount. It may shift a little when put under stress.

Are you sure it doesn't related to transfer case differential.

This noise could be a U joint, please inspect for rust around the joint to confirm, you may also remove the drive shaft and test the mobility of the joint as well.

Get the rear end up in the air with wheels off the ground check the rear axle by moving each wheel back and forth and in and out, if there is too much play or give it could be the rear axle bearing
