The problem is that after starting the engine, a gear grinding noise from the top of the engine near the starter has surfaced. This was after the oil pan gasket and oil was replaced.

It sounds like one of two things has happened; either when the oil pan repair was done they inserted an inspection shield or have the bolts in the wrong place and now are hitting the flywheel or the starter motor Bendix return spring has broken causing it to contact the flywheel. To check for this remove the starter to see if the gear is retracted into the starter housing. Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can hear the noise? That would be great. You can upload it here with your response.

Please let us know what you find.

Cheers, Ken

Thanks for the video it helps. Yep dont run it anymore, It sounds like something is hitting the flywheel. Remove the serpentine belt to eliminate any accessory issues. Then turn the engine over by hand to pinpoint the noise. Going to be a dust shield or like I said the starter bendix or the starter is not in right. Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

I just wanted them to look at the starter, but anyway at least that is off the table. I am back to the dust shield, bolt in the wrong place hitting the flywheel. Can you turn the engine by hand and hear the noise? There is something not in the right place.

Lately my Honda has been making a grinding start on the first start of the day. But only does it on cold mornings.I had the battery, alternator and starter checked at the auto store. And all three were good. He suggested it may be the connection at the starter. So what do you think. It huts recently started after sitting for ten days, when I was away on vacation. Thx. Nell

If you had the battery checked after some running, it might not be accurate. Was a high rate discharge test performed?

One way of testing is to connect a voltmeter and check the initial voltage in the morning. Should be at least 12.4 volts. Note the battery voltage while you are cranking. If it drops below 11 volts, it is going to be a problem.
