I had an accident with the car, and it damaged the front right headlight, suspension and fender panel. The car flew into a small escarpment after hitting the side of a bus. It deployed the passenger curtain airbag due to the impact of landing into the escarpment. It's also being replaced. See photos attached.

The engine turned off after the accident. It couldn't start again and neither did the key fob work to even lock the doors. The hazard lights stayed on when parking at an accident yard until the battery drained.

We replaced the nosecut and it will not start yet.

The mechanic suspects the steering column lock. I got one but the part number differs. We tried it but it didn't work.

- Will a used one with the correct part number fix the no start?

- Do you think the part number doesn't matter if it physically fits?

- What kind of software reload will be needed to install a used steering column lock?

- What other components can I look at?

So, when you say not start do you mean the engine cranks over and does not start or the engine will not crank over? Also does the security light flash when you try and crank it over? (Push the button) We should run the codes to see what comes up which should point us in the right direction.

In the meantime, please go over these guides to see if they will help:

The car doesn't produce any sound. It has a "Steering lock. Try to start again" message.

I got a used steering column lock to replace. Will a used one be reprogrammable for the 2014 Volvo v40?

Yours has a key or button switch? Also, we should do a CAN scan to see what codes come up. You can get a CAN scanner (Controller Area Network) from Amazon from about $32.00.

Here is a video to show you how:
