Thanks for including the fault codes. That cuts the diagnostic conversation to next to nothing. The Engine Computer needs to know the engine is rotating, (cranking or running), to know when to turn on the automatic shutdown, (ASD) relay. It knows that by the signal pulses it receives from the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor. Once turned on, the ASD relay sends current to the fuel pump or pump relay, the injectors, the alternator field winding, oxygen sensor heaters, . . . and the ignition coils.
Chances are the sensor is defective, but it is important to remember that fault codes never say to replace a part or that one is bad. When a part is referenced in a fault code, it is actually the cause of that code about half of the time. First you should inspect the wiring for a broken or bare wire, and look at the connector terminals for signs of corrosion. If someone has previously been poking test probes into the terminals, be sure the female terminals aren't spread and will make intermittent contact.
Also be aware that fault codes for both of these sensors often will not set just from cranking the engine. They usually need more time to set, as in when a stalled engine is coasting to a stop. For that reason, if you erase the codes, do not panic if the cam sensor code does not set again. When you first get the car that way, with no related code, you can use a scanner to view live data and see if both signals are showing up at the Engine Computer during cranking.
