Check the transmission fluid level for a start. Clutch slippages are usually due to worn seals resulting in pressure loss and the inability of the clutches to catch. The forward gears are not affected if only the reverse clutch is bad.
Are all the forward gears working correctly or is there any specific speed range that is slipping too?
