Hi,
When there is a power loss, my first suspect is the catalytic converter. Are you hearing any odd sounds or odors from the exhaust?
Take a look through this link and let me know if anything mirrors what you experienced:
My complaint was no power in d only. All the positions are good. this could not be the converter as i have power in reverse.

If it is in drive, does the vehicle move or does it not rev? Also, have you checked for diagnostic trouble codes? In 1987, they used an OBD1 system. You can retrieve codes by cycling the ignition key. Take a look through this link and let me know if you get any.
car move in drive but very low power. takes about 30 years to get to 20 MPH. only code is 11.

Okay, I can tell you are upset. Keep in mind, I am not there so I have to understand what is happening.
In your original post, you indicated, "Manually moving the accelerator linkage, engine revs. If in r, it also revs but in d it has no power." Does it rev in drive and only barely move? Is the transmission slipping?
