Hi,
The first thing I would recommend is to scan the computer for diagnostic trouble codes. This should help point us in the right direction.

I realize not all people have a scanner, but most parts stores will do it for you free of charge.
Also, take a pic of the engine where you feel there was a fire so I can see if there is anything that could be related to the problem.
I hope you understand why I recommended the scan. These problems can be the result of several things. Without having trouble codes, it becomes a guessing game and often leads to replacing parts that aren't bad.

PS: Please confirm the engine size. Every 1998 Escort in my manual is indicating a 2.0L.
The regular Escort has a 2.0L single overhead cam and the ZX2 has a 2.0L dual overhead cam.
