No forward gears

Accelerating normally from a stop I felt a bit of a clunk and then it felt like it was in neutral. Coasted to a stop. Will drive in reverse but no forward gears. Can feel it wanting to engage forward, but no motion.

It sounds like something inside the transmission broke. We should run the codes to see if any codes come up.

If nothing comes up I would get a rebuilt or used unit and install it. Here is a video that will show you step by step on how to do the job. The car is not the same but the steps are very similar.

I forgot to add that about a week before the right side CV axle was replaced. Could that have ant bearing on the issue (pun unintended!)? I am just venturing a guess that this is a repair that is likely to cost me more than the vehicle is worth.

An axle can cause a issue if it is broken internally at the CV joint. You will need to start the car and then look under when in gear to see if one if the axles is turning without the wheel and if so here is a guide to help you change out the axle:
