Tried to stop car at T intersection when the stop light suddenly went red and I was in the right turn lane. Fortunately there no cars in the intersection and I then noticed the front brakes started grinding.

Hi,

Replacing front brake pads and rotors isn't too hard of a job. When you do it yourself, make sure to get lifetime replacement parts so you never have to pay for them again.

As far as front brake pads, you can expect them to last approximately 25,000 miles. However, that can change based on terrain and driving habits.
