Code P0340, will not start

Hi,

If you are only getting a click when you send direct power to the S terminal on the starter, are you sure the engine isn't locked up? If you run power direct, it should engage the starter.

As you already know, the code is related to a camshaft position sensor. That wouldn't cause the starter issue. Are you sure the battery hasn't gone dead resulting from a faulty alternator?

Try this simple load test at home and let me know the results.

If that checks good, see if you can turn the engine by hand using a breaker bar on the crankshaft.

Well, I think you're right about the locked up engine. Had to take the tire off to and half the paneling under the engine but the crank shaft will not turn over, even with the plugs out.

Took the battery out to get it tested at the auto parts store and it tested good, sticker date of April this year.

I checked the oil again and it's to the full mark on the dipstick, a little dirty though. No sparkles or flecks that I can see. I don't want to drain the oil yet, as it might go to a shop and I'll let them drain it so they can get the whole picture to help with their diagnosis.

Any other ideas or does it seem like I'm looking at an engine teardown/replacement?

Did you try turning the engine using a breaker bar or just the starter?

If you used a breaker bar and can't turn it, you will need to tear the engine down to determine the cause. I can't be sure, but here is what I suspect happened.

Since you have a code related to the camshaft position sensor, I have a feeling the timing chain for the cams jumped time. The problem is this. This engine is known as an interference engine. Basically, if the engine timing between the cams (valves) and the pistons is off, they can hit each other because there isn't enough room. If that happens, most times there is interference between the two causing internal engine damage.

If I am correct, that would explain why you can't turn the engine with a breaker bar. Also, the cylinder head would need to be removed to see what actually happened. In most cases (not all), it is less expensive to find a good used engine.

I attached a pic below showing the cam gears and the timing chains. There are two on this vehicle. The larger one is where I feel the problem is.

If you want, I attached the directions below (extensive) for replacing the timing chain. These directions will give you access to check things. You don't have to do everything, but enough to remove the timing chain cover and inspect.

The biggest problem is this. You can't turn the engine to see if the timing marks are off. But at least, you will be able to see if there is damage to the chain or timing chain gears.

Let me know what you find. Also, if you do take it in, could you let me know what is found? I'm really interested in knowing if I am correct.
