No crank/start or power to the dash with key on?

1988 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN

Fried the starter wires so I used a starter button and that worked for a few days then no power to the dash.

Have you checked the fuses? Also, you must have a good ground to the engine from the battery and then to the frame. Did you fix the fusible links at the starter? Here is a wiring diagram for the starter so you can see how it works:

Where it says left or right of i/p in the wiring diagram what are the referring to?

This means the fuse panel under the dash on the left side.
