Car won't crank or start there's power to solenoid and to dash with key turned on but when I turn to start car the brake indicator light on dash lights up and I get a ding sound from the dash at the same time but no they sound or indicators of anything else. There's the same voltage getting to solenoid as the battery output, but car still won't start. Sometimes it will start up and run okay for a little bit but then chokes out and shuts off like it isn't getting any fuel or air but most of the time it just plain will not do anything but the dash lights and interior and exterior lights including the head and tail lights all work and I have been working on this car for two months now but myself with very minimal auto mechanic know how being self-taught because I can't get anyone to help me work on it and can't afford the repairs or a different car. So, I'm really kind of stuck between a rock (AKA my POS car) and a hard place (AKAbroke) one might say, lol.

Hi,

Hang in there. We can figure this out. When you say it gets power to the solenoid, are you referring to the solenoid on the starter motor itself?

At the starter motor, there will be a smaller gauge purple wire. It has no power to it until the key is in the start position. Check that for me. You will need a helper to turn the key.

Also, see if placing it in neutral allows the starter to engage.

I attached the wiring schematic below for the starter circuit and circled the wire I'm referring to.

Let me know.

Joe
