No crank no start dashboard display remains on L?

Vehicle turn off in L gear. Shifter moving dashboard display remains on L . Cable and gromit good. No crank no start.what could it be?

If the shifter works okay and feels normal the transmission range switch which is on top of the transmission has gone bad. Here is the location of the switch that needs to be replaced. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
