2003 Nissan Sentra Key Locked

Hello,
I have a 2003 nissan sentra gxe and when i went to get out of it yesterday the key will not come out. I can still turn it off and on but it will not go to the lock position so that i can take the key out....it stops at 1 and will not go to the lock position. any ideas on how to solve this problem?

there is a cable that runs from the gear shifter to the lock.
if the shifter is not all the way in park, or if there is a problem with the cable, then you will not be able to remove the key.
