It sounds like your vehicle might be in Limp Mode.
The limp mode gets activated in order to protect the engine. It can get triggered by number of issues that the vehicle might experience. It is usually a issue with the ECM or a critical sensor that provides signal to the ECM. When the ECM receives any signal that could be potential harmful to the engine the vehicle goes in to limp mode.
The Limp Mode can also be triggered for an issue with the transmission.

Any time the vehicle is in Limp Mode it will trigger the check engine light. So the first step would be to get the check engine light scanned to retrieve the trouble codes.
