2000 Nissan Sentra Shift sticks in park

Transmission problem
2000 Nissan Sentra 4 cyl Automatic 186000 miles

I have an automatic transmission, and I have to press the bottom several times to get the unit out of park usually5-10 times does the trick. What is jamming this up

Hi ddycha,

The interlock system is preventing the shifter from being moved out of park.

Check if the brake lights are working. If they are, with ignitin turned to ON, depress the brake pedal and listen for a clicking of the solenoid under the shift lever. If no clicks are heard or the click is weak, check the interlock solenoid ( under the console)operations.
