the switch that opens the front driver side window has to be pushed really really hard befor it will work. are the contacts diryt? can I clean them? what should I try befor I replace it?

Yes, you can clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner to see if it helps the switch any. If that does not help then inspect all of the wires to make sure they are clean and tightened properly. If wiring is OK it is time to replace that switch. If you need help removing the switch just let me know.
