1998 Nissan Sentra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Hello,
My vehicle did not start, a friend of mine stated that
I should check the neutral safety switch before
I check if the starter is bad. My question is /Is the switch located by the shift lever?

It's under center console,intergarl to A/T device.
