I was having a problem with my brakes and took the tire of to see what was wrong and when I was inspecting the caliper I saw a large amount of grease thrown all over the back of the caliper. I was wondering what that means if the boot of the axle or joint is broke?

Outer boot of your CV joint is torn. If you have never replace the CV axle, it is a good idea to replace the entire shaft as it is more economical labor-wise than replacing just the boot, until you are doing the work yourself.
