I gave my Nissan repair book to my son, but most CV joints do require you to disassemble the joints to replace the boot. The tripod inner joint is easier than the outer, but it probably does require internal snap ring pliers, plus probably a belt clamp crimping tool. Plus, it's just a messy job with all the grease. You're likely to find some wear of the joint. Rebuilt axles are a bargain even for the DIY, I think, although, yeah, something in me rebels at the thought of buying an $80 part because of the failure of a $5 component.
There are split boots you can buy that don't require disassembly or even removal of the axle. They tend to come apart again, however, so it may be only a temporary fix.
