Noises problem
1988 Nissan Sentra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive 173000 miles

the car used to drive great but the timing belt whent out and now that I replaced it the motor is making a knocking noise

Its probably the valve and igniton timing is off-recheck it-start all over -put the engine no.1 piston on its compression stroke/TDC and line all the markings on the cam and crank sprocket and stab the distributor down with rotor pointing to no.1 cap tower as describe in the repair manual.
