2003 Nissan Pathfinder service engine soon light

Have had problems with service engine soon light for ages. Had code checked several times it says vaccum leak. was told it was the gas cap. bought nissan gas cap. light out for 10 days. now back on. car does seem to run a bit sluggiish when light is on but fine when I can get it to stay off. Don't trust my local Nissan dealership. Inspection due soon. Any ideas?
