1999 Nissan Pathfinder Service Engine Soon light

The "service engine soon" light came on in my pathfinder. The manual says that it is an emissions thing. What is the most common cause of this light coming on? Also, does it have to be hooked up the the scope to clear the codes and make the light go out?

if there is a problem the light will come back on again. first put on a new gas cap and make sure its tightened at least 3 clicks
