I have a 92 Stanza XE, 100k miles, 2.4liter and noticed it was getting hot today. Sure enough it needed water, but I noticed the fans werent spinning. While filling the radiator they kicked in then shut off again while the engine was running. Yet the temp returned to normal. Any ideas on why the fans would shut off while the engine was running?
Thanks

The fans are controled by a thermostat that causes the fan to turn on and off. A thermostat is a switch that is effected by temperature change. When the temperature rises the thermostat will close, causing the fan to turn on. The fan will run untill the engine temperature is lowered enough for the themostat to open and this will then cause the fan to shut off. This cycle of on off happens continuously as long as the car is running.
