Emission sensor

1995 Nissan Pickup truck 100,000 miles, 4 cyl

A mechanic told me the check engine code was for a speed sensor (maybe vehicle or engine?). Is it possible for me to just buy the sensor from a dealer and replace it myself and save the $250 he wants to fix it?
