A friend of mine owns a 99 Maxima and the A/C Compressor has gone out according to a local mechanic, who wants $700 in labor to replace it. I have changed out A/C Compressors in American made cars in the past with no problem. I am wondering if there is anything I should know as far as special tools or problems with the actual removal of bad compressor. Thanks for any assistance.

You first have to evacuate the system. Usually A/C shop will do it for free because they get your refrigerant. Once the system is vacuumed, raise the car, disconnect battery terminals, remove the four bolts holding the compressor, two A/C lines, disconnect the electrical connector. Install is reverse.

I also recommend that you replace the filter/dryer every time the compressor is replaced.

Once installed, you go back to the A/C shop to evacuate the system again. Once vacuumed, you are ready to fill the system with appropriate amount of A/C oil and refrigerant.
