1997 Other Nissan Models 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 128k miles

recently started losing power when pulling hills, engine makes a roaring noise like there is an exhaust leak?
no oil loss, no overheating, no change in gas mileage, no missing or slipping, sometimes rpms race and drop

You may have a clutch slipping problem. That will make the engine speed up.
