My car makes a very loud squeal when it starts while the engine is cold, and it also takes longer to start. But after driving a few miles and the car is warmed up it starts quick and noise free. I have been told it could be the starter or the alternator, which is it? Could it be anything else cheaper to replace?

When the vehicle starts, the starter has done its job-nothing is wrong with it. Now for the squealer you can try one of the drive apparatus such as PS pump,AC compressor/Alternator.
