2004 Nissan Maxima Car shakes and bangs when car shifts

I was driving my car and when I was slowing down my car jerked and the fuel went down to empty and empty light came on. The abs light came on and the brake light came on. the tank was 3/4 full. The maxima didn't display the transmission mode (P, R, N, D, 1, 2) and when I put it in manual mode, it would jerk when I shifted up or down and take forever to pick up speed. On automatic mode, it also takes forever to speed up and only goes at max of 20 mph. please help.

suspect the charging system
check battery volts with engine running it should be 14.5 and better if not check fuses and suspect a bad alternator
