If the mileage is still working the speedo has gone bad and needs replacement. Here is a video that show the job that needs to be done on a similar car.

Please run down this guide and report back.

Go find the vehicle speed sensor at the tranny remove it ,place connector back On-turn key to On position, spin the sensor while someone looks at the speedometer,it should be fluctuating.

I bought my maxima a few months ago. 1990, automatic, with about 140,500 miles. I bought it knowing it needed some work on the speedometer, gaskets, and CV boots. My boyfriend replaced the intake manifold and head gaskets, and in doing so needed to remove the distributor. He couldn't get the timing back right, so I took it to a mechanic. He got it running, but it ran very rich. He had replaced the gaskets again, and put in a new mass airflow sensor and new spark plugs. When I went to pick it up, it felt like it wasn't getting enough gas and was trying to stall. Once it goes into second gear it's pretty much ok. The gas pedal also sticks. I knew the speedometer did not work when buying the car. When I drove it home for the first time, after all the work at the mechanics, the needle shot up to 95 mph. I had been driving for around 20 minutes and I assume I was going about 65-75 mph. It hasn't moved before or after that. Why did that happen? My boyfriend said it wasn't the cable; possibly the speedsensor? Also, the needle jumps when I hit the dash.

What gasket was replaced that req'd the distributor to be removed? The speedo....... is it cable driven or does it have an electronis sensor? Hitting the dash could be reconnecting a bad connection or it could be the slop in the speedo head or cable which may be the problem in the first place

Transmission problem
1992 Nissan Maxima 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My speedometer recently stopped working and ive been told by many that it is the speed senor. I was just wondering if that is true and how easy would it be to fix.

Part of the dash probably has to be removed to get at the speedometer assy where the VSS is located. also check the transmission side

Hi there,

i would be thinking that this is a problem wit the speed sensor, this is located on the back of the speedo, this will be a job for a mechanic to check over.

So I replaced the speed sensor in my 1990 Nissan maxima and the speedometer still doesnt work. I took the gauges out of my parts car and put into my car and now when i get to about 45 mph the speedometer goes to the opposite side like 85 mph and goes down when i slow down and kinda goes up when i speed up and the needle will stay on the opposite side so it will say 125 mph at dead stop. what shall i do?

If you had pulled the gauge needle out, then the gaue has to be replaced as you have set the speedometer out of calibrations.

my speedometer doesnt work, sometimes not at all and sometimes it flips up and down but not staying on a set speed, hitting the top of the dash really hard will make it work for a few seconds sometimes, not always

Sometimes the speedo gauge fails. If hitting the dash corrects it, then it's obviously not the speed sensor in the tranny. First check the condition of the connectors at the back of the gauge/cluster. If they're fine, you'll have to replace it. They're cheap at a junk yard, but you'll have to make sure they work
