1996 Nissan Maxima Gears will not engage and no tension on

When I press the clutch down and start the car. I go to put it in gear but it's not letting me put it into gear, like something is blocking it from slipping in.When the car is off I can put it into gear and start it that way and it'll move...I hope someone can help as this happened on a road trip three hours from home....

Check the clutch master cylinder, slave, and the free play and pedal height adjustment if okay-its time for a new clutch assy.
