My mechanic is saying the EGR valve needs to be replaced. The car makes a loud humming sounds when it idles and the humming increases with rpms. Otherwise, the car seems to be performing fine.

The mechanic quoted me $1200 for the repair including the time to figure out what was wrong with the car.

I don't think the car is worth that much anymore. If I don't fix it is it dangerous? Am I likely to be stranded?

Thank you!

Hello Thanks for the donation. The EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) will not leave you stranded, but it will eventually cause your vehicle to idle poorly. The quote is WAY overpriced though. I suggest having another repair shop replace the EGR valve for you. Below is an estimate of what it should cost to have the EGR valve replaced, including part price and labor priced. You will be saving $1,000 easy.
