Tires and Wheels problem
1995 Nissan Maxima 6 cyl Automatic 144000 miles

I have a 1995 Nissan Maxima. I recently spent $1000 on repairs. I have now been told by my mechanic that it would cost me around $1200 to replace front and back struts and linkage. Back ones aren't necessary but front ones need to be changed and will cost around $600. I just want to make sure that I am not being ripped off and that this is necessary work. The problem is the front passenger side wheel was making a terrible sound as if when driving on a flat tire and it's banging against something. When the mechanic checked it out he noticed an oil leak in the strut and saw some scratches on it as if it were rubbing against metal. However that noise has since subsibed cosiderably but is still there. As I have absolutely no knowledge of cars etc I want to make sure this indeed is the problem and costs that much too. Anything you can tell me about struts, linkage, damaged struts and relevant repairs etc would be greatly appreciated.

Does the car bounce? Push the car down with your knee. Then does the car bounce? If the car bounces then yes the strut needs to be replaced...
