1992 Nissan Maxima timing belt or chain tensioner

i have the se model with the 3.0 v6 dohc 24v engine when i start the car i get a loud ticking sound until the engine reaches normal operating temp. then it goes away until cold startup again.i was told this is the timing chain tensioner.my question is twofold.do i have a timing belt or a chain and can the tensioner be replaced. also i have had the lifters changed at 100,000 mi thanks for any help

Hi kerwin,

Chain driven would have no plastic cover at the pulley side.

To replace the chain and tensioner is a big hassel as the oil sump needs to be removed.
