I have a Nissan Bluebird Sylphy 2002, 1.8 L automatic transmission. Recently an issue has raised its head which I cannot find the answer to.

My engine will be idling or I will be driving, when the revs will suddenly drop and come up again erratically, like a sharp bite from a fish on a fishing rod. It will do this for a few seconds, and then the engine will usually cut out. Sometimes the engine will randomly cut out with no warning while I am driving. Often too, I outright struggle to start the car.

All the problems seemed to start at around the same point in time, which leads me to believe the root cause is from the same issue.

It usually does this when driving at low speeds, although it has occurred occasionally when driving at high speed. I have checked the idle air intake valve, cleaned the air filter, changed the spark plugs, and still the issue persists and seems to get worse.

Another thing I have noticed is that it tends to occur when the engine is warm, and I start it again. Usually it runs okay on a cold engine, although it has cut out on a cold engine a few times too.

A mechanic friend suggested that it may be the fuel pump playing up, although I do not see why it would cause the revs to behave erratically, like the camshaft is snagging on something. Could it be a hole in an air channel upsetting the fuel to air ratio?

The car has only done 110,000 k's. I seriously need to find the solution, so if anyone can give me advice this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

To me it sounds like you have a dirty throttle bore causing the the PCM to lose correlation with the throttle actuator. Start by disconnecting your battery and then follow this guide.

We should run the codes as well.

Please run down this guide and report back.

Cheers, Ken
