I drive a 2003 Nissan Altima. The car overheats after only a couple of miles. It would go up to the last line of the meter, stay there for a minute, then you smell coolant and it goes back down. After another maybe 5-10 miles it would slowly heat up again. The coolant gets refilled and it would not overheat for about a week. So I'm sure there is a leak somewhere. In addition to this problem the AC is not working, warm air is the only thing that comes out.

I read somewhere that you should actually turn the heat and the fan on when traveling long distances on the highway cause it cools the engine. As of right now I can't get it fixed. What precautions should I take if I have to drive? Is there another problem besides the leaks?

Best fix the leak if its actually leaking sooner or later that leak will get worst or big and you gonna lose all the coolant and there goes your engine.
