I need to know the correct way to install the alternator belt. I have it on, but I am not sure if it is correct?

There is a tensionier that holds the belt in place. The automatic tenionier turns. Take a wrench and turn the tensionier in the direction to loosten the belt and slip the belt off.

I would like to get some info on how to install new drive belts on my 1997 nissan altima myself. I am not even sure if there is more than one belt or one serpentine belt. Also, is there some sort of guide or handbook I could purchase to assist me with these types of maintenance procedures?

You have two serpentine belts. A larger one controls all but the AC pulley, an the smaller one runs that.

Yes, I suggest that you purchase Haynes manual 72016 (covers Altima from 1993 through 2004).

Once you have the manual, turn to page 1-17.

Adjustment - all models except the 2.5L engine.

Belt tension is adjusted by moving the idler pulley. To adjust the belt, loosen the lock nut (or adjuster) and turn the idler pulley adjusting bolt (usually on the bottom).

Replacement - all models except 2.5L engine

Loosen the drive belt adjustment bolt, slip the belt off the crankshaft pulley and remove it.
Remove the AC belt first to gain access to P/S, Alt, W/P belt. It is a very good idea to remove both belts at the same time.
Mark each belt and its appropriate pulley groove so the replacement belts can be installed in their proper position.
