what does sealing a chassis of a car do?

Hi there,
Sealing or proof coating is a process where an extra protective layer of sealant is sprayed under the cars body, this is an added protection for rust, if salt is used on the roads to combat ice, it is often causes problem with rust, but i feel that more modern forms of deicing is not as sever as the oil salt method. This treatment is often a good idea if living on the coast as sea salt will be a problem as well.
