do i need a lift in order to replace a 1998 altima clutch and transmission (ie; hard to reach and lower body chasis/frame/sub-frame needs to come out and is hard to reach), or can i do it on ramps/jacks?

Lift is not necessary. 6T jack stands are the better bet. Ramp is not recommended due to the fact that the axles have to come out to remove transmission, so the wheels have to off.
