1998 Nissan Altima Front Wheel Drive Automatic 160000 miles

My 1998 Nissan Altima has started making a loud whining sound when I turn the wheel sharply. The sound only starts when I turn it sharply, and then it never goes away and gets louder with acceleration. Soft turns do not cause the sound to start, only sharp turns.
Does this sound like a power steering pump issue, and if so about how much would that cost to repair? Could it possibly be just fluid levels?

Thanks!

Hi there, check that the fluid is ok and that the belt is tensioned correctly, failing this I feel it will be a pump issue, costs will vary depending on where you get this work done, best you contact a mechanic in your area for a quota as I am in Australia any my pricing will not be very relevant.

Checked fluid levels and it was bone dry! Just had all topped off last month so I knew there had to be a leak. Thankfully it was just a hose-relatively cheap and easy fix at the shop. Now she sounds great!
