I just bought a 1996 altima that will start but only run for a few seconds. It almost acts like there is a security system that is engaged but I don't believe the car has such a system. Would the fuel filter be the obvious starting point. What else would I check. I have no history on the car.

your idle air control valve and air filter would be a good place to start. If you can get it to autozone or your local autoparts shop, you can get a free engine scan.
