I own a 1984 nissan 300zx and I am founded of this vechilce and would like some professional opinion I have taken it to maryland emission for many years and I do the mechanic work on most of my cars, but a very poor diagnsios on some problem, I have taken it to many differnt shop and individual, were in some point I felt that I was abused inaproparately as result of my neive state to hold on to the car. But I really would like to restore as best as I can. To the point my valve are hit hard and loud until it warms up little then quiet down, trying to determine which one it is or replace, ask a around and little info I can get from anyone claim that they are hydrualics and self adjusting and don't need work, the manual dont really specify what to do. What am I listen for or looking for and compression wise.

Hello,

It sounds more like the lifter than the valves.

I would recommend replacing all the Hydrolic Lifters at same time. My experience is that when replacing just the bad one it doesn't seem to end. You replace the one and the following month you replace another and so on and so till you finally have replaced them all. So do them all and be done with it.

That sound you are hearing is the hydraulic lifter not the valves. I've got pretty much the same problem on my 1986 Z-car. I'm gonna have to replace the lifters in my pretty soon & an oil pump for that very reason. I would check the lifters & the oil pump.
